Durian Goodies!

Guest Writer: ah Yi

Riding on Agent Durian's immense indulgence in durians, we will like to share great recommendations of durian goodies!

Disclaimer: Agent Durian or myself do not get a commission for sharing such recommendations, this is purely out of our love for durians =)

Head down to Goodwood Park Hotel for its annual Durian Fiesta! For 2008, the season lasts from 1 March to 31 July. The hotel offers an exciting range of 10 Durian pastries and cakes, made with trueness-to-goodness D24 durians.

Since there are so many to choose from, I will introduce the top three which I had tried personally.

My personal favourite would be a tie between...

Durian Roll
This is not to be mistaken for the Durian Crepe, Durian Roll is a durian swiss roll. This pastry marries the lightness of sponge cake and the richness of durians, perfectly. Since the Roll is sold by pieces and by roll (1kg), its tempting to slice it as huge as possible when doing it myself.

Heavenly!

and
Durian Pudding
I would expect the pudding to be overpowering favourful but surprising, this pudding is not just durian puree. It retains the fragrance of durians, yet its delightful and light as a dessert. Its an ideal way to end off a meal.

It comes in individual serving which looks larger than the usual after-meal puddings you get at restaurants. However without realising, one finishes the pudding in a jiffy. There's never such a thing as too much good food.

Durian Puff
If I am not mistaken, the hotel used to sell mega puffs which is the giant version of this puff. Now, they only served this baby version. They have funkier (upgraded?) versions - Durian Crumble (durian mousse covered with butter crumble) and Durian and Crunchy Hazelnut Tartlets. However, the classic Durian Puff remains the signature item on menu!

Its a choux pastry filled with durian mousse, best enjoyed when served freezing cold. Despite its petite size, the creamy yet soft durian filling is generous - its oozing.

These are indulgences you can't miss when suffering from withdrawal symptoms from the off-durian seasons!

"i've found gold!"

very sedap!

"wah the seed so small!!"

cannot finish pack them up put in freezer...

special delivery in the boxes...

'death' by durians...

just returned from one delivery session...

tough job... went around sg with PA Durian & Driver Durian to deliver quite a few lots of durians...
keeping my fingers crossed everyone is satisfied with their durians.

end season durians are really a tough lot. cos some of them can get a little hard on some sides and a little watery, though the taste will not be too far off. probably will stop taking orders next season near ending of the season.

i am guaranteeing quality taste of durians from this plantation as a whole as it is ranked in high regard for butter durians... BUT plssss understand that natural produce are bound to have some inequality in the way they are developed, not every single durian will be PERFECT.

however, we do ensure great service and will tend to real complaints of inedible durians. but pls dun threatening to throw durian shells at me if you do happen to get them cos unless i can make these durians from flour, i cannot guarantee that they are flawless. what i can do is to replace them for you if they are really inedible and pls do not make things difficult for my people by not producing evidence, throwing everything away and claim refund for something i cannot verify.

pls pls pls auntie uncle brother sister.... 请你们高抬贵手!!!

however, am very encouraged by one family that smsed me immediately upon eating their durians telling me that its really very good! thank goodness some end season durians did me proud!

looking forward to next season!!

handpicked durians on its way

benson spent soooo much time since early this morning to pick out the best durians for my delivery today...

kept asking him if he is sure they are not either unripe, dry or problematic.. he was like "you dun trust me ar... i pick personally one leh"

hehe.... of cos i trust you mr ku but jus scared of human error ma... my life is at stake leh. they better be good, if not i have to kneel durian shells you know...

of cos i'm confident of the taste of these durians from old trees. But durians, being a natural product, tend to have many flaws. be it cracked, unripe, rotten, out-of-shape (not all durians are oval or round, some can look like a lopsided speech bubble, etc). do not be taken in by the looks, many out-of-shape durians actually taste better than "pretty" durians.

other than the fact that there are many species of durians, which the durian expert will have to distinguish in one look, they will have to grade it A, B, C according to its shape, size and state. (Of cos we get the A!!! ;D)

different species have different prices. in our plantation, there are quite a few species, sultan, D24, milk, etc, but mostly butter. being an expensive type of durian, durian graders who buy for durian hawkers tend to be very 'ngiao' when grading it because of its price. some purposely grade a obviously good durian into B or C with a flimsy excuse just to get a better price. this sometimes angers benson's mum (a 60 year old lady with alot of zest), who will pick it out and claim it for personal consumption rather than being cheated of the grading. ;)

the best part about durians is that no two durians are alike, jus like all things natural, even unique to its own taste. so savour the durians you get today and indulge in its unique flavour, cos the next one you open will not taste exactly the same again. :)

get off my back

been getting alot of bohliao calls and its killing me.
so far i have blacklisted 4 numbers.

am keeping them at the moment till more drastic actions and i will make sure you guys are the ones who will have to change your numbers, not me!

UNDERSTAND?!

hmph.... >,<
*nose high high*

8days & shin min daily

lady luck has been smiling at me..

by a stroke of luck, i got interviewed by a writer for 8days and had a short review published on the online store and the durians... me & benson's sis delivered the durians all the way to the food editor's house for her to taste!!!

thank goodness it was a good review as the durians are really sedap! ;) (i've absolute faith in the quality of our durians!!!)

the publicity was great help cos upon seeing the review, shin min ran a story on my online durian store. by the time i got back to the reporter, she told me the story has been sent for print.... when i asked her if she needed any durian photos, she said she used the one on my website.
i jus assumed it was the butter durian picture. little did i noe she ran my profile picture!!!
wad a headline... translates "pretty girl sells durians, not good i kneel durian shell"

how classy......

oh well, not exactly the way i'll like the durian story to run but it does help in terms of publicity... of cos my worries abt getting the wrong attention came true..

received some lewd msges about being friends at all... but i guess thats the price to pay for having a face behind the store. there is no way i can have an online store without a face and expect people to trust me and buy durians from me.

but many cute uncles and aunties called and ordered durians from me.
one said :"你的榴莲如果不好吃,我用榴莲壳丢你!"
another said: "你的榴莲最好是好吃。。。不然你就要跪榴莲壳了"

spare me uncles & aunties!! dun so fierce can!??!?!

i realise people who really know how to eat durians are not very price sensitive and they really do care more about the quality. they believe in paying for quality and thats the kind of customers i want.

seriously, if you keep complaining about my durians being expensive, you obviously haven't been eating durians enough! its true butter durians are not cheap, in fact they are about the most expensive species around. if you do know market prices, you will know that my durians are at very good prices and if you taste them, you know they are good stuff.

all i need is for customers to take the first leap of faith and i'm sure they'll want my durians every season.

i want long term biz, not one off transactions.
i want you to able to enjoy my durians every season till the durian trees die!! :)

welcome peeps

well... decided to blog about my durian adventures..
and... i'm sick of only owning a green blog. haha

jus discovered something... there isn't the correct writing of 榴‘莲’ in my chinese input application. it should be the one with the '木' 字旁. pls bear with my wrong writing. :)

so far biz is good..
too bad season is ending... now butter durian prices very expensive ar..
we selling $19 per kg already... cos very little supply. (Geylang selling $20! ;p)
you know durians, like all goods in the basket, are very price sensitive to demand and supply... within this one season alone, price ranges from $15 to $20.

next season should be a butter durian feasting season becos prices will be better due to expected increase in supply. :)

got quite some enquiries asking for other types of durians like sultan, etc. we do have them in the plantation but in very little quantity and they are mostly for sale to distributors. sorry to disappoint you guys but for this online store, we only sell the best! MAO SHAN WANGs aka butter durians aka kunyit!

Bitter, creamy and lusciously sweet! *slurps*

they taste really good frozen you know! jus pack the durians in a box, place them in the freezer and you have the best and most natural durian ice cream~~ its heavenly i tell you!!

do keep a lookout for the next season... its happening end may!
do email me at onlinedurianstore@gmail.com should you want to receive any updates on durians.

very soon we will also be offering one-day durian tours.
keep your enquiries coming!!! :)

butter durians rock'on!
